MICROBIAL BIOBURDEN OF ORTHOKERATOLOGY AND HYDROGEL CONTACT LENSES AND STORAGE CASES USING A HYDROGEN-PEROXIDE DISINFECTING SYSTEM

Background and objective: The fitting of orthokeratology (ortho-k) multifocal soft contact lenses (SCL) is becoming increasingly popular worldwide for reducing the rate myopia progression. However, overnight wear use microbial contamination storage vials has been shown to increase risk corneal inflammatory infiltrative events (CIEs). Therefore, we conducted a pilot study compare rate, level, type vialswhen participants ortho-k SCL in combination with hydrogen-peroxide disinfecting system.
 Material Methods: A prospective, single-centre, randomized, crossover was evalu-ate level lens during along solution over two 10 day wearing periods. Ocular signs symptoms were assessed at baseline after each period. In addition, collected, amount evaluated using viable culture standard identification methods.Results: Twenty-five adults enrolled, 21 completed study. One (5%) lens, five (24%) vials, one vial contaminated (P > 0.05), predominantly Gram-positive bacteria. None had both SCL. No significant differences found between ocular signs, including conjunctival redness roughness, or staining (all P irrespective SCL.
 Conclusion: This provides first data that directly compares ortho-K versus patients disinfection system. overall much lower (30%) than previously reported wear. results support conducting larger clinical trial designed understand different materials modalities.
